Programs
American Studies Program | Australia Studies Centre | China Studies Program | Contemporary Music Center | Latin American Studies Program | Los Angeles Film Studies Center | Middle East Studies Program | Oxford Summer Programme | Russian Studies Program | Scholars' Semester in Oxford | Uganda Studies Program | Washington Journalism CenterThe Uganda Studies Program provides students with immersion in a local community and broad exposure to a variety of people and places in Uganda and neighboring Rwanda. Students in the Uganda Studies Emphasis (USE) live on campus at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, Uganda, sharing their lives with university students from Uganda and other nations of Africa. Students in the Intercultural Ministry and Missions Emphasis (IMME) live with host families within walking distance of the university, experiencing life as a Ugandan family member. All USP students take classes from UCU professors and share their meals with UCU students. USP students will not leave Uganda without being exposed to and engaged in the realities of African life. In addition to the core experiential course, students will choose from an approved selection of courses from the UCU curriculum to earn up to 16 hours of credit.
find out moreAll USP students will be required to take at least five courses while at Uganda Christian University. The vast array of topics include African Literature, East African Politics, Understanding Worldviews, African Traditional Religions, Law and Christian Political Thought, and Reading the New Testament in Africa along with many other electives. However, in addition to class time centered on contemporary political, social, economic and religious issues confronting African peoples and countries, USP is highly dependant on understanding and learning from cross-cultural experiences and how this exposure to Ugandan Christianity challenges our own faith. Experiential learning of faith, politics, and relationships, challenges students to think outside the box and shift from ethno-centrism to cross-cultural appreciation.

One of the best aspects of the USP is our partnership with Uganda Christian University. Our American staff teach and administer much of your USP experience, but we are fortunate to have Ugandan faculty to teach various classes on African subject matter. We also have excellent Ugandan staff in administration who will be part of your life on campus and when traveling, sensitive to your needs as a visitor but helpful in mediating your experience of their culture.

USE students live on-campus and will experience much of their non-academic time with Ugandan college students--in the dorms, in the dining hall, at the sports fields, in the local town, at church services, etc.
IMME students permanently reside with local families and they will experience much of their non-academic time with their families; an experience which includes a range of things from daily chores like making dinner to more extended cultural exposure like attending weekend family events.
find out moreStudents in their sophomore, junior, and senior years of college are all welcome to attend the Uganda Studies Program. Our program looks for students with a commitment to following Christ and a willingness to be a member of a Christian community in Uganda as a guest in this rich culture and vibrant country. USP students are ambassadors of North America, their home institutions, and, most importantly, of Christ. Therefore, USP seeks out students of character as well as those with openness to learn and discover.
