RSP Objectives

As a program sponsored by the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, the Russian Studies Program is academically grounded in a Christian liberal arts context. Efforts are made to integrate the Christian faith throughout the curriculum and community life. In light of the specific observations noted above, the objectives of the Russian Studies Program are as follows:

  • To create in students an awareness of the variety of peoples and cultures in Russia and help students understand the historical interweaving of religion, culture, politics and economics in this region of the world.
  • To provide a way for students to observe the dynamics of change in a post-Communist society which is attempting to rebuild its foundational institutions and discover values upon which to structure its communal life.
  • To help students understand the complex issues surrounding the current regional and ethnic/religious conflicts within Russia and between Russia and the new republics.
  • To introduce the Russian language through classroom instruction, by immersion in the culture, and by living with Russians.
  • To provide students with the opportunity for experiential learning through social interaction and service projects with Russian people.
  • To educate students concerning the history of Christianity in Russia, the role of the Russian Orthodox Church, the emergence of other churches (e.g., Baptist, Pentecostal and independent movements), the struggle for religious freedom, and the development of Christian associations and institutions in post-Communist Russia.
  • To give students a vision for future involvement in the former Soviet Union.
