Since 1976, the American Studies Program has been the educational laboratory for participants seeking to explore national and international issues in public policy seminars.
Program highlights:
Since spring 2004, the CCCU has partnered with the Wesley Institute in Sydney, Australia to offer the Australia Studies Centre. Throughout the semester, students study theology, global justice issues affecting Australia, Indigenous cultures and the arts. Additionally, students choose electives in theology/ministry, music, drawing/ graphic design, dance and/or drama.
Home stays, service learning and travel around Australia are important components of the ASC. Students observe Australia’s beautiful landscape, live in the cosmopolitan melting pot of Sydney, connect with the poor of Sydney’s multi-cultural ghettos, and engage the political capital Canberra and its power players. Students also come to know the traditions of Aboriginal people during an Outback excursion and spend the last week of each semester traveling to New Zealand to meet with Maori people.

The China Studies Program enables students to engage China’s ancient history and intrigue from an insider’s perspective. While immersed in Chinese culture, students participate in seminar courses on the historical, cultural, religious, geographic and economic realities of this strategic and populous nation.
Students choose between completing a broad Chinese Studies Concentration or a Business Concentration. Students also study standard Chinese language and apply their skills by serving in an orphanage or tutoring Chinese students in English. The program begins and finishes the semester in Hong Kong and introduces students to the diversity of China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an and Xiamen. This interdisciplinary, cross-cultural program enables students to communicate and understand the unique culture and people of China with an informed, Christ-centered perspective.

The Contemporary Music Center provides students with the opportunity to live and work in the refining context of community while seeking to understand how God will have them integrate music, faith and business.
The CMC offers three tracks: Artist, Executive and Technical. Students within each of the tracks receive instruction, experience and a uniquely Christ- centered perspective on creativity and the marketplace, while working together to create and market a recording of original music. Each track includes coursework, labs, directed study and a practicum.

Based in San Jose, Costa Rica, the Latin American Studies Program introduces students to a wide range of experiences through the study of the language, literature, culture, politics, history, economics, ecology and religion of the region. By living with local families, students become a part of the day-to-day lives of Latin Americans.
Students also take part in a practicum/internship and travel to nearby Central American nations. Students participate in one of four concentrations: Latin American studies; advanced language and literature; international business; and environmental science. Depending on their concentration, students travel to nearby Central American nations including Nicaragua, Guatemala and Panama.

Founded in 1991, the Los Angeles Film Studies Center trains students to serve in various aspects of the film industry with professional skill and Christian integrity. The curriculum consists of two required seminars, Hollywood Production Workshop and Theology in Hollywood, focusing on the role of film in culture and the relationship of faith to work in this very influential industry.
In addition, students choose one elective course from a variety of offerings in film studies. Internships in various segments of the film industry provide students with hands-on experience. The combination of the internship and seminars allows students to explore the film industry within a Christian context and from a liberal arts perspective.

Based in Cairo, Egypt, the Middle East Studies Program offers students a unique opportunity to explore and interact with the complex and strategically important world of the modern Middle East.
Students explore diverse religious, social, cultural and political traditions of Middle Eastern peoples through interdisciplinary seminars. They also study the Arabic language and may work as volunteers with various organizations in Cairo. Through travel in the region (typically Israel, Jordan and Turkey), students are exposed to the diversity and dynamism of the local culture. At a time of tension and change in the Middle East, MESP encourages and equips students to relate to the Muslim, Eastern Christian and Jewish worlds in an informed, constructive and Christ-centered manner.

The Oxford Summer Programme allows students, as affiliate members of Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford, to do intensive scholarship in the oldest university in the English speaking world. During the five-week programme, students hone their research and writing skills and delve into the areas that interest them most while exploring the relationship between Christianity and the development of the British Isles. Seminars and tutorials are given on specialized topics under expert Oxford academics in the areas of English language and literature, history, including the history of art and history of science, philosophy, and theology and the study of religion. The programme is structured for applicability to rising college sophomores, juniors, and seniors, graduate and seminary students, non-traditional students, teachers, and those enrolled in continuing education programs.

The Russian Studies Program strives to give students a broad learning experience in the largest nation in the world. RSP students are exposed to the depth and diversity of Russian culture through encounters with the Federation’s three largest cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg and Nizhni Novgorod.
The majority of the semester is spent in Nizhni Novgorod (Russia’s third largest city). Students live on the campus of Nizhni Novgorod State University while they complete intensive language learning and live with a host family in the second half of the semester. Additionally, students complete course requirements in Moscow, the heart of both medieval and modern Russia, and St. Petersburg, the Russian “window to the West."

The Scholars’ Semester in Oxford is designed for students who want to study intensively and to a high standard. Students develop their academic writing and research skills and explore the disciplines and interests of their choice. As Visiting Students of the University of Oxford and members of Wycliffe Hall, students study in the oldest university in the English speaking world. SSO students enroll in a primary and secondary tutorial, an integrative seminar (or thesis in the case of second term students), and the British landscape course. Students group their work in a concentration so that all elements of their programme work together. SSO is designed for students interested in classics, English language and literature, theology and the study of religion, philosophy, and history, though all majors may apply. Applicants are generally honors and other very high-achieving students and must have at minimum a 3.5 GPA to be considered for the programme.

The Uganda Studies Program provides students with both immersion in a local community and broad exposure to a variety of people and places in Uganda and Rwanda. Students in the Uganda Studies Emphasis (USE) live on campus at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, Uganda, sharing their lives with university students from Uganda and other parts of Africa. Students in the Intercultural Ministry & Missions Emphasis (IMME) live with host families within walking distance of the university. All USP students take classes from UCU professors and share meals with UCU students. These relationships give students a first hand perspective as they explore issues such as poverty, aid and missions, and as they seek to reconcile the realities of East Africa with their Christian faith. Students also spend time in Rwanda and rural Uganda. In addition to the core experiential course, students will choose from an approved selection of courses from the UCU curriculum to earn up to 16 hours of credit.

The Washington Journalism Center is a semester-long study program in Washington, D.C., created for students interested in the field of journalism. While in Washington students take classes focusing on their personal writing skills and on the history and future of the media. These classes—Foundations for Media Involvement; Reporting in Washington; and Washington, News and Public Discourse—combined with an internship at a top news publication help students learn to integrate their faith in a journalism career. Students also participate in service learning opportunities as part of the WJC experience. Students earn 16 semester hours of credit. Students live in the Dellenback Center in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.

The country of Uganda is located in the heart of East Africa. It borders a large portion of Lake Victoria, the "pearl of Africa," as Winston Churchill referenced it. Hedged in by both jungle and plains, and boasting the source of the Nile River, Uganda presents a unique visual and cultural setting for study and experience. Wildlife reserves, waterfalls, cultural centers, you will have access to them all. Unique recreational activities include white water rafting down the Nile, going on safari, and camping on Lake Victoria's many islands. In addition, you can study a wide range of topics from politics to literature to religion, but all with a distinct focus on Africa. Unique artistic and educational activities such as the university's Cultural Gala give USP students a rare and exciting chance to see Africa through a new lens.

The Chinese studies program is based at Xiamen University, a seaside city directly across from Taiwan. Xiamen, frequently called the Garden City, is famous throughout China but little known by most Americans. As one Calvin College student commented, "Xiamen kicks Beijing's butt any day!" Still, during the program, you will see more of China than most Chinese see, with a week of Orientation in Hong Kong, a two-week History module in Xi'an, and sight-seeing in Beijing and Shanghai. There are several free weekends when you can travel on your own, either in our own Fujian province, or fly to someplace of particular interest to you.

The Los Angeles Film Studies Center is located in one of the primary film and television business and production centers in Los Angeles: the Miracle Mile. Adjacent to Hollywood and Beverly Hills, LAFSC is within a few miles of Paramount, FOX, Sony and CBS studios. It is about 20 minutes from Universal, Warner Brothers and Disney studios. Los Angeles is both home to the Hollywood Film Industry and one of the world centers of business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, technology and education. Nestled between the San Gabriel Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, L.A. offers outdoor lovers experiences ranging from hiking to snow-skiing and surfing.

visit program pageWhile there is not much peace to speak about in the region these days, MESP students realize the need to first confront the facts and the narrative of each party before offering advice on how Christian faith might inform solutions to longstanding, nitty-gritty, disputes over land and resources.
visit program pageA significant element of the USP experience revolves around the weeklong trip to the neighboring nation of Rwanda. Students will learn of Rwanda's distinctive culture and people as well as in depth study of the 1994 genocide. First hand encounters with genocide survivors, memorial visits, and exclusive lectures all shape a powerful study of peace and reconciliation. In addition, elective courses including Politics and Peace provide a pointed look at the issues at hand. Additional curriculum supplementation of relevant literature and film is always available in the USP library.

Learn from those who exist outside the powerful social circles at the ASC service placements, which may include inner-city youth programs, homes for the mentally and physically disabled, aged-care facilities, soup kitchens, and coffee and food vans for the homeless community in Sydney.

refugees, Egyptian elderly, and Egyptian children.
The Uganda Studies Program is now offering a service learning practicum for USE (on campus) students. With a curriculum based on a 40-hour service requirement and weekly class time, the course shapes a unique experience for the students involved. Service sites can include orphanages, schools, street children ministry, and a day care. Each location provides a special chance to see into a special facet of Uganda and its people. And with a program devoted to emphasizing the importance of service and community presence, the practicum allows for an outlet for all that's being learned.

visit program pageUsually while on your trip around China, you will engage in a service project in which you and the other students will spend about a week helping out in whatever way is deemed useful by our hosts. In the past, this has included teaching English to high school students, playing with orphans, or manual labor (such as painting, digging up tree stumps, and brick-laying). Typically, students look at this experience as the highlight of the program; as one student said, "A time that was about others rather than ourselves."

The LAFSC internship program gives you an opportunity to glimpse the inner workings of the Hollywood entertainment scene. During the first week of the program, each student meets individually with LAFSC’s internship coordinator to determine the best fit for your personality and desires. Internships are 20-24 hours a week and are available in just about every area of interest. The LAFSC’s internship program is a great way to get your foot in the door and test your Hollywood dreams!

Your internship is living the life of an artist-working with a manager, a record company and concert promoters. As a USP Intercultural Ministry and Missions Emphasis (IMME) student, you would study ministry specific courses such as a Cross Cultural Immerson/Missions Practicum. You would also attend dinners and lectures hosted by resident missionaries. Courses available to both concentrations include African Traditional Religions, Understanding Ethics in Africa, and the USP core course, Faith and Action. In addition, the trip to neighboring Rwanda allows for an in-depth look into the role of the church in the nations dynamic history.

Within the courses of the Uganda Studies Program, African and Western professors alike incorporate the relevant issues of the world community today. The Uganda Studies Program provides an academic and experiential survey of contemporary political, social, economic and religious issues. These include simple living studies with curriculum supplemented by literature and media from Shane Claiborne and Donald Miller to Wendell Berry and Uganda's president, Yoweri Museveni. A service learning practicum for USE students opens up opportunities for students to engage in the local community and their efforts to sustain education and service.

While Uganda's official language is English, there are more than 30 distinct languages spoken by Ugandans. Uganda Christian University is located within the Buganda geographical region where the traditional language spoken is Luganda. Students of USP have the opportunity to take an elective, not for credit Luganda language class taught by Ugandan, Jjaajja (Grandma) Robina.

Some of the most significant learning experiences for you will be experiential. For International Ministry and Missions Emphasis students, a large part of this experiential learning is exercised in their semester-long homestays. In this emphasis, you will live with a local Ugandan family and soon be absorbed into the home as another one of the children. Attending church with their family, learning to cook over a charcoal stove, building relationships with new neighbors, and engaging in their community, you will learn to understand Ugandan living from Ugandan lives.

The Uganda Studies Program places a high value on understanding the contemporary political, social, and economic issues present in Africa. At USP you will invest in topical study of poverty, social justice, conflict, and reconciliation. Courses including East African Politics and East African History offer priceless opportunities to be taught by Ugandan professors and learn from their insights. Professional Screenwriting is an elective course in contemporary screenwriting, which develops an understanding of dramatic structure, character and dialogue development, and the writing process. You will complete a full-length screenplay for a feature film or "movie-of-the-week." Emphasis is given to the role of Christian faith and values as they relate to script content. The course is designed after UCLA’s graduate screenwriting courses, and is taught by a graduate professor of screenwriting at UCLA who is also working, credited Christian screenwriter.

Courses include African Traditional Religions, African Literature, and a not for credit Luganda language class. You will also participate in both urban and rural homestays. While staying with these local host families, you will experience a variety of cross-cultural functions including weddings, funerals, Sunday church, and simply sharing family meals together. Intercultural Ministry and Missions Emphasis (IMME) students live with these families for the length of the semester while Uganda Studies Emphasis (USE) students stay for three weeks out of the semester. In addition, the intensive weeklong trip to Rwanda offers an invaluable opportunity to study the nation's history and its progressive advances in reconciliation.

You will navigate the waters of cultural and theological film criticism and ethical dilemmas that define the entertainment industry: the engagement and meaningful response of believers in Hollywood seeking to be “shrewd as snakes and innocent as doves.” The goal is to gain deeper insight into the relationship between film and theology and the creation of entertainment with spiritual depth and artistic rigor.
You will get to hear panel discussions and speakers who write the books on theology and film and also known filmmakers/practitioners of theology in Hollywood. In addition, you will participate in service projects, creative projects, scholarly readings, in-class discussions and debates and write critical papers.

The CSP offers a business concentration with up to 6-credits: the 3-credit course "International Business in China" and 3-credits if you complete a three-week internship at a local Chinese company. We choose to arrange Chinese-setting internships rather than internships with American companies abroad, because the latter tend to be simply American internships with a Chinese background "out there." The goal of the classroom course is for you to learn, from a prominent Chinese scholar, how Chinese do business; the goal of the internship is for you to see and adapt to that way of doing business in a Chinese setting.

Mandarin Chinese is studied by all CSP participants, but no knowledge of it is assumed before you come to the program. The focus is on "survival Chinese," the basics of getting things, food and around. Those who have already studied Mandarin Chinese may take a waiver test. If you pass, at the Mandarin teacher's discretions, you may take a 3-credit course in Advanced Mandarin (whose level is determined largely by you and others taking the course).
